“A reader lives a thousand lives before he
dies. The man who never reads lives only once.” George R.R Martin. With this
good morning , honorable principal, vice principal, teachers, and all my
friends. I am Pranita Adhikari of 10 F and I am here to give a talk about the
strategies and my reading habits. Hope you all enjoy.
Knowledge knows no bounds. Even if we gain
more and more knowledge, we cannot be satiated as there is much more than we an
absorb. Reading book contributes towards the achievement of our knowledge in
terms of human experience and information. Reading is constructing meaning from
he content and making sense. Reading develops the vocabulary and even the
language of a person. So I have 10 ways to cultivate a lifetime reading habit:
1.
Set times for reading.
2.
Always carry a book.
3.
Make a list of books you read.
4.
Find a place to read.
5.
Reduce television/ Internet.
6.
Read fun and compelling books.
7.
Make reading pleasurable.
8.
Set a high goal.
9.
Make connections between readings
on other issues.
10.
Read every day.
Everyone in this world craves for
happiness. Happiness is just a state of mind. It is very difficult to define
happiness. For some, happiness is related to material glory and for some it is
associated with the health of a man, but for me happiness is reading and
reading is happiness. You all may be thinking that I am a book worm right? Yes ,I
am a book worm. I do read lots and lots of books.
My reading habits have changed over the
years. As a child, I had different tastes in book. Even though my habits and
reading preferences have changed over the years the years I still enjoy it as
much as I did when I was a child. My reading habits as a child were such that l
read when I came home from school, and before I went to bed. I always had my
nose in a book. I have a pretty large collection of a book as well. For
birthdays, I would make a list of new books I wanted. I’d rather receive books
as gifts than toys! When I was young I used to read fairy tales. I could picture
in my mind everything that I was reading. As an adolescent I enjoyed fictions
books, I try to read 2-3 books per month. I haven’t scheduled time for reading.
I read whenever and wherever I find something to be read. Once I start a book I
get tempted to read more and more like a child gets tempted for chocolate. The more
we read, the more we like. if you all take a
book as a chocolate, you will enjoy the taste and get deeper and deeper into
own world.
There comes a time when you have to choose
between turning the page and closing the book. It happened with me. It was in
class eight. My dad handed me a Novel titled “A walk to remember.”
By Nicholas Sparks. I started reading it
and with each unfolding page, my temptation grew , resulting in me finishing
that book within 4 hours . I was so much in that book that I had no idea of
what so even of the world. To be honest, I even cried in the process of reading
it. I was in my own world, my world of happiness.
I must say that it is a book worth reading.
Many of you may prefer to watch television, play around, go on dates, browse the
internet, but I prefer reading a book rather than
obeying all those stuffs.
Through reading I have improved a lot. I
have improved in expressing ideas, reading, communication and writing. The more
you read, the more you explore, and the more you explore, the more
knowledgeable you become. We should awe books and read as many as we can
because today a reader, tomorrow a leader. One of the books by Nicholas Sparks.
Right now I am in the process of reading his 5th book “The Choice.”
In conclusion, reading has always been an
important part of my life. I believe that reading stimulates my brain and it
gets me thinking. I would say that reading is my favorite thing to do. A book
is a dream that you hold in your hand. Reading a book is like re-writing it for
you. I cannot sleep unless I am surrounded by books. Reading is dreaming with
open eyes. I would like to end my talk here with a quotation. “I love books. I
love that moment when you open one and sink into it, you can escape from the
world, into a story that is way more interesting than will ever be.” Elizabeth
Scott.
